Following up after the interview If for some reason you are not interested in the position, it isn't necessary to spend the time on a thank you note. However, doing so can work in your favor down the road and leave a positive impression. If nothing else, you can state something to this effect - " While the position I interviewed for yesterday appears to be a wonderful opportunity, I do not feel it is one that is best suited for me at this time. I would certainly appreciate being considered in the future for opportunities that may be more appropriate for someone with my background. Thank you for your time and consideration. Your company truly seems like a wonderful place to work." If you are indeed interested in the position you have just interviewed for, send your thank you note later that same day! It can be type written, handwritten on a note card, or however you feel comfortable. Just send one! Always restate the position, the date you interviewed, and your willingness to meet others if needed. State your true desire to be selected for this position. Keep it brief but poignant. It is not recommended that you send a thank you by e-mail, as it is can be considered quite impersonal. Once you've met the employer, your relationship is no longer electronic - even if your resume was first delivered in that manner. You have now met face to face with one individual or many. Make it personal without being overbearing. But send that thank you. If you feel the urge to contact the employer about the position you interviewed for, wait at least a few days, or leave a voice mail after hours. Just state briefly in your call or on your voice message, that you were hoping to learn about the progress of filling the position, and that you are available for additional questions if needed.
